Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

We are happy that you are interested in learning more about RCIA and the Catholic faith. Our goal is to be as supportive as possible on your journey.

The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) is the process by which non-Catholics learn about the Catholic faith and way of life. It is a spiritual formation process culminating with entry into the Catholic Church with the celebration of the Sacraments of Baptism (if not previously baptized in a Christian denomination), Confirmation, and the Eucharist.

From your perspective, OCIA is a time of discernment, an opportunity to get a basic understanding of the teachings of the Catholic Church as well as experience the spiritual side of the faith. It is a time to ask questions and determine if the Catholic faith is right for you. Each person’s faith journey is unique and there is never any pressure for you to become Catholic.

What can you expect if you are part of OCIA? Know that one does not simply complete a registration form to become Catholic. The teachings of the 2,000-year-old Catholic Church are understandably very wide and very deep. It takes time to gain a basic understanding of these teachings and OCIA provides that venue.

OCIA is a period of reflection, prayer, instruction, discernment, and formation. At St. Elizabeth Parish OCIA sessions are on Sunday mornings from 9:30am to 11:00am. There is no set timetable but it usually takes about a year for most to complete the process. In addition to Sunday sessions, attendees are encouraged to attend Sunday Mass and scripture study as well.

Is it worth it? We, of course, think so but only you can answer that question for yourself. For sure, you will make some wonderful new friends, have a lot of fun, greatly expand your knowledge of the bible and teachings of the Catholic Church and we think your spiritual life will grow as well. We hope to hear from you soon.
